As the daughter of immigrants, she studied toward a career of eradicating poverty, and knows the internal voice that challenges: “How dare you retreat to your studio to create?”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mitali Perkins is an award-winning author of novels and picture books for young readers, including You Bring the Distant Near; Forward Me Back to You; Rickshaw Girl; Bamboo People; and Holy Night and Little Star, among others. She is also the author of two nonfiction books for adults: Steeped in Stories and Just Making. She studied political science at Stanford University and public policy at U.C. Berkeley and has taught at Saint Mary’s College of California, Pepperdine University, and Calvin University. Born in Kolkata, India, Perkins lived in India, Ghana, Cameroon, Great Britain, Mexico, Bangladesh, and Thailand, and is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
